Dominican festival !!!

July 7 ,2007 This week is the Dominican festival. All the Dominicans celebrate their culture today. Some people celebrate the Dominican festival all week. A lot of people were at the Dominican parade.It was from 1:00p to 8:00p. A lot of people were wearing Dominican shirts, hats, shoes, socks and pants. Also a lot of people had flags and big smiles!!!

Some people are going to the parade. Some people stay at home and watch the parade on television. Other people have a Bar-B-Q at home. Also some people do arts and crafts with their friends and family. Some people do nothing at all.

I went to the parade and I saw a lot of parade floats. The floats were red, white and blue, just like the Dominican flag. People were on the floats singing and playing music. It was Dominican music of course. I took some pictures of the floats at the parade.

Dear Milan,

Thank you for responding to my letter. I’m going to answer your questions you wrote me in your card. The question was did a robber do something to me? No, actually we have a lot of protection, so a robber can’t rob almost anybody. Since there are a lot of cops, they help us so if they see someone robbing they arrest the robber. Also, I want to answer the question that you asked which was what do I do on my free time? I will say that I read some books I am trying to finish or I will finish any work I need to do/finish. The last question you asked was do I have a lot of friends? What I would say is that I have a lot of friends, some are friends from a long time ago and some are from my school.

What I did over the weekend was that I went to see a movie called FANTASTIC 4: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER. That was a cool movie because heroes were trying to save the entire planet. It is not real movie but it’s famous. Also, I visited my cousin and my sister in Pennsylvania. What I liked of the weekend was that I went to six flags a place that there are a lot of roller coasters.

I wanted to ask you if you have a lot of friends. I also wanted to ask if you like video games? Do you like music? Also, my school is about to end but I wont be traveling but we can still keep sending letters to each other. Here’s my email so we can stay in touch over summer: _______________________.

Richard Serra

Richard Serra is a talented artist. His amazing artwork can be found in the Museum of Modern Art. He makes colossal sculptures out of steel. We visited his exhibit and this is what we thought. 

Some of use felt very scared but others felt differently. Someone felt like if they were in a room and we can do anything we want to do. Others said they felt like they were in a big flower with a open part. Others said it felt like a big volcano, a big leaning cake, or a maze.

It sounds like an echo when your in the middle of the chamber. Diana said, “it sounds like being in a jungle because you heard different sounds.”

We mostly all felt different things. Luz said, “I felt scared because I thought the space to get out would close.”

“It reminded me of when I moved in to my new house,” Bryan said.

“I felt like a little baby because inside it’s big and and you’re just sitting or walking in it,” said Emanuel. “I felt really, really nervous because if you’re sitting you feel like the sculpture is getting bigger.”

A lot of us were a little confused when it came to the question of why we thought he made this. Two of my classmates still tried.  “To show you can use your imagination to make things,” Bryan guessed.

“Maybe he made it to show that you can make art with different materials,” Emanuel suggested.

This is how we all felt, what we heard and what we thought the art was made from. We would recommend this exhibit to our friends, because it was really fun!

Dear Pablo,

Thanks for responding to my letter and my questions. Where I live there hasn’t been a tornado yet. But, if it happened I would be scared. It hasn’t been a problem either. It never happened in other places I lived before. It has happened in other places in the United State. But not where I live. We don’t have tornados in New York because there are a lot of hills and it’s hard to form. We have some mountains too, and that is why there are not tornados in here. Tornados are mostly formed in: Texas, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. These states are in the middle of the country and New York is at the really end of the east.

I did a lot of stuff this weekend. On Saturday I was using the computer almost for the whole day. I also went to a sea food restaurant with my dad for Father’s Day. I know it was on Sunday but we celebrated that day. On Sunday I went to visit an old friend of my mom, because she was celebrating their 50 years of marriage. There were fire crackers and others cool stuff.

I would like to know what you did on the weekend. I would like to know more about where you live. I would like if you responded.

Pablo the school is going to finish one of this days. So I want to know if you want to keep the conversation with me in the summer or if you don’t. I also want to know in which place are we going to keep the conversation with we do. Do you want to keep the conversation on e-mail or at the blog that we have?

            Estimado Reni y Pili,

                        Ha recibido la carta que me mandaste de ahí en chile. Han llegado las vacaciones   del verano y ha sido un verano muy bien hasta hoy. Mi familia está bien y yo también estoy bien. Yo ha sido muchas cosas. Yo ha ido al parque muchas veces y fue muy divertido. Yo también ha ido a la casa de mi abuela más para jugar con mis primos y primas.

                                Durante las vacaciones ha ido a muchos lugares, no solo al parque ó la casa de mi abuela, pero también a Nueva Jersey. Durante las próximas semanas de las vacaciones voy a ir al campamento del verano y voy a viajar más que nunca. Voy a ir a muchos paseos.

                          Cuando recibes esta carta espero que los dos estén bien. Yo quería saber como estas. Sí tienes preguntas mándamelos en la próxima carta que escribes a mí.

Dear Sebasthian,

This summer vacation I’m planning to go to the beach, the pool, and stay home a couple of time to help my mom with my baby sister Lorena. I’m also planning to do a summer project for school. It’s a math diary. I’m very looking forwards to it because I love math and I’m good at it. The thing I’m mostly looking forwards to is going back to school.

July 4 is Independence Day and I went to see the fireworks. They were amazing! They were all different colors. Some times I got a little scared because they were really loud. In my house you can also see fire works through the window. I had a lot of fun.

Some things I would like to now about you are: When is Independence Day in Chile? How do you celebrate it? Our summer vacation started June 27 and it ends September 04, does yours start the same time?

Thank you for writng back to us. It’s interesting that you are not like us. we do not know any poems about Gabriela Mistral. we did saw shrek the third. for the vacation we go to: the beach, the park, the pool, and we also travel to different places.

Well , we haven’t traveled by now. Have you? yeah it’s very hot over here in the summer.No we dont know any people from chile.Yes ,we both love to play playstation. We hear bachata, merenge, reggueton, and other kind of music.

Queridas Diana y Luz,

 

Mi nombre es Alejandro Kamke Ossandón, tengo 12 años. Estoy cursando sexto básico en el Colegio ______, ubicado en el país de Chile. La verdad es que no soy muy artista como ustedes. A mí me gusta hacer deporte sobretodo tenis y football, los que practico dos veces a la semana. En cuanto a Pablo Neruda, sé que es un gran poeta Chileno, pero en realidad me gustan más las poesías de Gabriela Mistral ¿Conocen alguna?, son muy buenas. Mi cumpleaños es el 10 de marzo y lo celebro con mis amigos en mi casa. Tengo muchos amigos y me gusta porque así puedo jugar football con todos ellos.

 

Les cuento que este fin de semana fui con mi familia a ver Shrek tercero, me gustó mucho, ustedes,la vieron? Hoy domingo, celebramos el día del padre y tuvimos un almuerzo familiar con abuelos, tíos y primos, lo pasamos muy bien, aunque mi papá está en China por trabajo, pero regresa esta semana. Siempre está viajando a China y dice que es un país muy interesante. Algún día me gustaría ir con él.

 

Qué hacen para las vacaciones, hace mucho calor?. Van fuera de nueva York o se quedan ahí?. Conocen Chilenos que vivan allá?, a mí me gustaría mucho conocer esa ciudad. Les gusta jugar play station? Qué tipo de música escuchan?.

Hola mi nombre es Milan Rafaeli, tengo 11 años y estoy en sexto básico. Vivo con mis papás y hermanas. A mi me gusta salir con mis amigos del condominio, navegar. Mi deporte favorito es el velerismo y el futbol. Yo he vivido en Chile toda mi vida.

Bueno, aprovechare este momento para responderte todas tus preguntas. Bueno, para aprenderse los bailes como en cualquier otro baile hay que practicar y como la cueca es el baile típico de Chile se practica en clases, para prepararse para el 18 de septiembre que es el dia en que Chile se independiso, ese dia lo celebramos bailando cueca.

Algo que yo he aprendido de Nueva York es que es super peligroso por que hay bastantes ladrones sueltos ¿te ha hecho algo un ladrón alguna vez?. Tambien te queria preguntar ¿que haces en los ratos libres? ¿tienes artos amigos?.

Nosotras somos 2 compañeras que vamos en el colegio san jose. También vamos en el 5ºA. Les vamos a contar sobre la Reni:

Yo soy alta, de pelo café, de ojos cafés, morena y vivo en piedra roja (condominio) que queda muy cerca de mi colegio. Me gusta la música y tengo una con la Pili (mi amiga).

Ahora les vamos a hablar de la Pili:

Yo viví en EE.UU. (WASHINTON) yo soy baja, de pelo rubio, tengo ojos que se me cambian de color depende de la ropa que use o como esté el día. Me gusta skiar, igual que la Reni (en agua y en nieve), me encanta los caballos igual que la Reni
