2. How to Write a Movie Review

Word Document: How to Write a Movie Review

1st paragraph

  • Begin by stating the film’s main idea/ lesson
  • Include the title of the movie in the first paragraph
  • Say what and who the movie is about (who the main characters are, what is the conflict)
  • Include the name of the actor who plays each character the first time you mention the character’s name

Body paragraphs

  • Say what you like and dislike about the movie
  • Choose 2-3 elements that catch your attention, and comment on each (whether it was something outstanding or something terrible). Movie elements include the acting, special effects, animation, music, dialogue, the way the story was told, cinematography (how the movie looked), humor, etc. (Obviously you will not talk about all of these things, just what caught your attention as being particularly good, bad, or interesting)
  • Compare the movie to other movies you’ve seen if they have something in common and it helps you explain your idea
  • REMEMBER: begin each paragraph with a topic sentence

Conclusion:

  • Try to convince your audience to go and see it or to save their money and stay home (you can rate movies on a star system; 1 star = terrible, 5 stars is fantastic)

Movie Review DON’Ts

  • Give away the ending or too much of the plot
  • Stop at just saying what the movie was about; you need to include your own opinions and observations
  • Jump from one point to another; your review should be well organized and easy to read.
